Raising the minimum wage would give a particularly huge boost to minority workers. Today, more than half of all African-American workers and nearly 60 percent of Hispanic workers earn less than $15 an hour. Bernie Sanders says that our job in the wealthiest country in the history of the world is to make sure that every worker has at least a modest and decent standard of living. In January 2019, Sanders sponsored the Senate version of a bill to increase the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2024. He states we are living today in an American economy that is doing very well for the people on top but not so well for working families. Raising the minimum wage to $15 will benefit many workers. Raising the wage won’t hurt the economy: it will grow it! The research shows minimum wage increases do not reduce employment. For small businesses, raising the wage will bring in new customers, raising businesses’ bottom lines and increasing profits.
